About Mike : Bio

Senate Leader Mike Gibbons is dedicated to protecting Missouri families and children in their homes and neighborhoods. He is a life-long resident of Kirkwood where he began his public service in 1986 when he was elected to the Kirkwood City Council. He then served eight years as a state representative, and now is in his second term in the Senate. He has been entrusted with many leadership positions culminating with his colleagues electing him to serve as the leader of the Missouri Senate in 2005 and again in 2007.

Mike is a proven leader with a big heart who finds common sense answers to complex problems. He has been a champion for protecting our children, and a defender of life. He protected our children with some of the toughest laws in the nation so we can convict sexual predators, put them in jail, lock the door and throw away the key. He protected our most vulnerable, the developmentally disabled and elderly who live in institutions, by mandating reports of abuse, making them public, and strengthening penalties. His leadership resulted with tough laws that cut nearly in half the production of methamphetamine in Missouri. He's worked to protect Missouri consumers from identity theft and he has protected victims of sexual and domestic violence so they can feel secure to come forward and seek justice.

Sen. Gibbons practices law at a large firm with offices across the state. Before, he practiced law for 21 years alongside his father in Kirkwood helping the people of their community.

OCCUPATION

I have practiced law for nearly 24 years along with my public service. For 21 of those years, I practiced law alongside my father, Michael Gibbons, in Kirkwood helping the people of our community. I now practice at one of Missouri’s largest law firms: Stinson, Morrison, Hecker LLP.

PUBLIC SERVICE
I began serving the people as a council member when I was elected to the Kirkwood City Council in 1986 at age 27. After six and a half years there, I was elected to the Missouri House and eight years later was elected to the state Senate, where I have served nearly two terms. As a senator, my first two years I served as the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, the next two years as Majority Floor Leader and was then elected twice by my fellow senators to serve as the President Pro Tem, the top position in the Senate.
